Sole Agents: A Super Condition and Totally Original Falling Block Original Single Shot 2 Barrel Set, 1 Rifle and 1 Shotgun Barrel with Matching Serial Numbers, This piece retains an unbelievable 99% original case colors and virtually all of the original blue with both bores as new, The Rifle is a 32-40 with a 28" Octagon Barrel, The Shogun is a 20 Bore with a 30" barrel at .627" .000" (Cylinder Choke), 3" chamber, Both barrels have matching serial numbers as does the receiver and the wood, The Takedown screw is on the right side of the action body, The rifle rear sight is a buckhorn style like the Series 22 & 24 sights used by Winchester with a sliding insert for elevation adjustment, The front sight is a fixed blade dovetailed into the barrel and it still has 95% original heat colors, With the 32-40 barrels it is 7 lbs. 3 oz. and as a 20 Bore it is 4 lbs. 13 oz., The LOP is 13" over the original buttplate with the Hopkins & Allen logo, Both forends are checkered as is the pistol grip stock, The wood remains at 96% with the original finish, The original case colors at 99%, The original rifle barrel blue is at 97%, The 20 Bore original blue at 96%, Both bores as new. Here is a great example of an early turn of the century American Single Shot. Because of the outstanding condition this would fit well into any serious Single Shot collection. There are Hopkins & Allen's out there but very few remain in this condition.
Hopkins & Allen were quite a large maker of Deringers, Pocket Revolvers, Single Shot Shotguns and Falling Block Rifles from 1868 to 1915 in Norwich, Connecticut. This gun is marked Merwin Hulbert & Co. as sole agents, they were sold to them under contract from H&A. Nearly all of the guns sold by Merwin Hulbert were made by H&A. About 1868 Bacon Manufacturing Co. was taken over and formed into Hopkins & Allen. Bacon built a fair number of revolvers in the early 1860's. At one time they stated "Largest manufacturers of high-grade, popular priced firearms in the world". The Hopkins & Allen firm started with Charles Converse, Charles W. Hopkins, Samuel S. Hopkins and Charles W. Allen. They built a large line of "Suicide Special" revolvers; how would that go over in left leaning Liberal Connecticut today?
